Innsbruck, ich muss dich lassen, Heinrich Isaac, 1450-1517
Innsbruck, I must leave you
For I am traveling the road
to a foreign land.
Deprived of my joy
and knowing not how to get it back,
I will be in misery.
I am burdened with great sorrow
which I can shed only
through the one dearest to me.
O my love, leave me not bereft
of compassion in your heart
that I must part from you.
My comfort above all other women,
I remain yours forever,
always faithful, in true honor.
And now, may God protect you,
safe in virtue,
till I return.
always faithful, in true honor.
And now, may God protect you,
safe in virtue,
till I return.
Su contrafacta religiosa:
O World, I must leave you,
I travel from here along my way
to the everlasting fatherland.
I will give up my spirit
so that my body and life
lie in God’s merciful hand.
My time is now completed,
My time is now completed,
death ends my life,
to die is to my advantage,
there is no staying on earth,
I must gain eternity,
with peace and joy I travel hence.
My trust is placed in God,
I will behold his face
truly through Jesus Christ
who has died for me,
gained the fathers grace
and so has become my mediator.
Johann Sebastian Bach, Cantata "Meine Seufzer, meine Tränen" (Mis suspiros y mis lágrimas), 1726
My sighs, my tears
cannot be counted.
when melancholy is met daily,
and misery does not go away,
ah, then for us this pain must
already pave the way to death.
Johannes Brahms, Preludios corales, 1896
